A short collection of Big Black songs as recorded by INSTRUMENTS and The MOTES.
Going back as far as the MOTES days in the mid-90s, we developed a tradition of kicking off new sessions by recording a cover song. It was an effective way to break the ice, and as our studios grew in complexity it also became a way to sort out any technical issues before starting in on new material.
After a few Dead Kennedys and Nomeansno covers we eventually starting recording Big Black songs exclusively. There was never any intention of making any of this public, but as the collection of recordings grew it became apparent that some of it was perhaps mildly entertaining and maybe even worth sharing. So with Steve Albini's blessing (yes, I asked him), here are four of our favourite Big Black covers. Recording and performance quality varies wildly, but I think the joy of playing some of our favourite music comes through regardless.
It should also be noted that for a total of three practices in 1997, King Dick was a functioning live band, featuring Philip Clark as Steve Albini, Craig Thibault as Dave Riley, myself (J. LaPointe) as Santiago Durango, and Jon Hutt as Roland. Don't hold your breath for a reunion of this lineup.
